Remember when I said I was going to use TaxAct to do my own taxes this year? I did yesterday and I can't recommend it enough! It took me about 30 minutes to complete my return - and only that long because I am one of those anal people who insists on checking and quadruple checking everything. And then doing it again.
One thing I would recommend though is to seriously double check it. We were ready to efile and decided to check it against last years return to make sure it looked the same. (I know. Dork.) That is when I realized that I had forgotten to put in my student loan interest paid. We also almost missed the renters credit the state of Michigan gives us because we didn't know if was called the 'homestead' something or other. Once Marty caught that we hadn't included that information we went back and found where to include it.
We sent our return last night around 9pm. This morning our Federal return has already been accepted by the IRS and our refund should be deposited on February 8th. We are still waiting to hear back from Michigan.
One more thing - if you plan to efile, have last years return handy. You have to have either your adjusted gross income or PIN from last year.
